They say first impressions are often the most important impression you will make upon anyone. When it comes to finding a job, it’s often your resume that will make the first impression upon any HR manager or recruiter. It has always been an intimidating task when it comes to writing or rewriting your resume, but it is also a fact that a wisely written resume is a sure fire way of getting the desired attention of a potential employer. Your resume can also work as your personal publicity tool and this tool can enable you to take the first step towards relishing your dream job. So it really makes a lot of sense to give your resume the time that it deserves as ultimately it is your resume that will do the all important job of catching the eye of the best companies out there. As compared to countries like England or France, resumes of Australian job seekers are quite different as they are less rigid when it comes to following rules and formats of preparing a resume. Of course all resumes no matter where you are include basics like personal details, work experience, educational qualification and achievements. However, it doesn’t matter what format you are using in your resume but there are some key points that you should always remember while preparing your resume. - Limit the number of pages of your resume to maximum 3 pages. Most recruiters or HR managers don’t have the time to go through lengthy resumes as they go through literally thousands of resumes every week and more often than not, simply toss out long essay type resumes. - Always number the pages. You want to give an impression to your potential employer you are an organized person and take care of small details. - Always use black ink on a white or off-white A4 size paper. Resumes that are pleasing to the eye will definitely get better acceptance than those with annoying colours or fonts. - Use basic fonts like times new roman, Garamond or Arial. - Keep a consistent check on formatting, fonts, headings and sub-headings throughout the resume. - Use very easy-to-understand language. Do not try to confuse the person reading your resume. - Always check spellings once on your own after they have been checked by the computer. Never rely on the computer only. Spelling mistakes are a huge negative on any resume and it gives the impression that if you cannot even take care of spellings, then you won’t be able to match the quality standards of an organization. - Use bulleted points and phrases quite frequently. - Always use a format which is very easily printable and can be attached with emails very easily. - Make sure that your contact information is quite clearly visible with your home phone number, mobile number, email and your contact address. Avoid giving any contact details of your current workplace unless you are absolutely sure you can take the calls in private. - Try to highlight your key work experience and achievements as early as possible in your resume. As mentioned before, recruiters are very busy people and spend less than a minute on some resumes. You need to catch their attention as early as possible so that they give your resume more time and consider calling you for a face-to-face meeting or interview. Taking care of the above mentioned points will go a long way in achieving your dream job. There is huge competition for jobs nowadays and any advantage you can gain will help you in going ahead of your competition. Especially IT Jobs. Your resume is one of the best tools in that respect and has to be utilized wisely. Of course apart from creating a good resume, you need to make sure your resume is seen by lots of employers. The best way of achieving that is listing your resume in a popular job portal on the internet. If you have a great resume, then you can be sure that you will have employers calling you instead of you trying to call them.
